From a Far (O Bellter)

This series of exhibitions is an ongoing project. Information and Images are from the first and second edition (2024&2025)

This series of exhibitions are cultivated through the slow work of observing and discreetly collecting items from someone very close to me. This process has been a nurturing of an intense fascination with another's 'mundane’ life and transforming their discarded scraps into art, something that becomes almost worshipped (by me at least).

My initial deep attachment came from my reading of the novel “The Museum of Innocence” by Orhan Pamuk. A depiction of longing, devotion, and adoration from afar. Completely inspired by the behaviour exhibited in the novel, I became enticed by the notion of collecting remnants and allowing myself to hold someone so dear without their acknowledgment. This uncanny closeness has manifested itself into an obsession of observation. Driven by a yearning to immerse myself in another’s life without want or need for communication or formality. Gathered here is that which I hold dearest from this ritual.

Please Hold the Line

Created in 2020

This work was created closely to a musical backdrop – an album of Tom Waits, Closing Time. Searching for nostalgia, feeling and depth was the driving force behind the creation of this short film. Exploring my own natural surroundings, eroding dunes, overgrown British telephone boxes, the places where the forest meets the sea and discovering the sensation of giving in to this natural world becoming all consuming. Watching the forest reclaim that which mankind left behind.

Nothing Hill

By the Leo Collective - ongoing research

This creation is rooted in an interest in romantic comedies as the traces of modern history and a mirror of society. We work with texts, films and characters while honing a practice of rewriting and editing that transforms into improvisational and performative experiments. Our interest in creating practices without limitations, with a variety of methods accentuates our want for radical experimentation and an embracing of unexpected shared processes.

Through a Glass Darkly (Trwy Wydr yn Dywyll)

Created originally in 2023, ongoing

This work explores the spiritual identity of Welsh culture, its Celtic pagan traditions interwoven with early Christian traditions rooted in community connectivity and folk practices. Originally based on religious iconography, the ritualisation of this becoming religious choreography and representations of Welsh saints and religious figures. Drawing inspiration from Marthas own experiences growing up between the South Wales coast and the Rhondda Valleys and studying the Welsh language and sounds that encompass Welsh communities, being poetry, song and Welsh hymnody, born from moments of industrial hardship, religious revival, community identity and a desire for hope and unity.

. (Period)

Collaboration with Nicolas Dang, choreographed by (the spirits of) the Moon

“Dewch i ymweld a ni yn creu, mae’r drysau ar agor i chi. Dere i gadw cwmni i fi ac i ddatgan eich straeon.” -Martha wrote on the board-

Eng: “Come and visit us while we are creating, the doors are open for you, come to keep us company and to whisper your stories.”

The ambiance of the performance is almost like stargazing. The quiet night helps you get into a contemplative state. You come and choose a spot to observe the constellations emerging. The moon slowly crosses the sky. You may feel nostalgic, get lost in your thoughts, or need to change position. It is all part of the experience.
